This week there is something magical happening in the basement of Oklahoma in the Northern Quarter. It all came about when artist Bren O’Callaghan and our very own Elle Brotherhood went to a Nicho Box workshop in The Gaslamp Bar, which is run by fashion design student Natalie Dawson. Bren had so much fun making the Latin American folk art that he decided to get a group together to make a life size Nativity themed Nicho box and from there the plan was formed.
The idea is that you can have your photo taken with the Nicho Box giving you a chance to be part of your own Nativity. Images of Mary and Joseph were shot in the Fred Aldous Photo Studio by Elle, costumes designed by Natalie and with art direction from Bren. The images were then printed in large format from the Freds Print Shop.
There are many treats inside the Nicho box including illustrations from Bryony Jackson and David Bailey. There’s also an angel shaped cactus and anatomical heart made by prop maker Kevin Thornton, expect lots of Mexican inspired art and craft to fill the Nicho box and plenty of glitter in there too!
To read more about Nicho Nativity there is an article in The Skinny written by another one of the Freds family Ali Gunn. This Friday will be the opening of the Nicho Nativity and is well worth going to, it’s open from 6pm – 9pm, come and become Frida Khalo and let’s get festive!
