British Art Show 8 29 Sep

It is an exciting month coming up in Leeds, and not just because we will be opening our doors! On Wednesday 9 October British Art Show 8 opens to the public at Leeds Art Gallery. Organised every five years by Hayward Touring, the exhibition showcases British contemporary art, across four cities. This year British Art Show 8 opens in Leeds before touring to Edinburgh, Norwich and Southampton. The exhibition, curated by Anna Colin and Lydia Yee features forty-two artists, twenty-six of which have produced new commissions and many are showing work never seen in the UK.

For British Art Show 8, Leeds Art Gallery will remove almost all of its collections from the walls, ahead of essential restoration work which will see most of the gallery close until 2017. Once the gallery spaces are cleared, the exhibition curators and gallery staff will have the opportunity to transform the gallery for British Art Show 8 which promises to be a complex multimedia exhibition.

A key area that emerged from our conversations with artists, and which came to form British Art Show8’s broad thematic premise, involves new thinking around materiality at a time of increasing convergence between the real and virtual spheres. Artists’ engagement with the material world can take different forms: some involve revisiting skills, knowledge and traditions that have been overshadowed, while others critically explore the physical implications of our digital existence.”

We are looking forward to:

Post Forma, a major new commission by acclaimed Italian designer Martino Gamper.

This participatory work is driven by Gamper’s interest in how objects can be transformed and reused, rather than discarded. Post Forma sees Gamper collaborate closely with Yorkshire artisans; specialists in weaving, bookbinding, cobbling and chair caning, transforming broken objects into unique pieces of craft.

Diagrams of Love: Marriage of Eyes by Linder.

Linders’s new textile rug is a new work produced in collaboration with Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh. This sculptural work will be activated by a ballet choreographed and performed by Northern Ballet, which will travel and evolve with the exhibition.
