Our latest window display is by graphic artist Ian ‘Swifty’ Swift and despite the digital world that we live in, Swifty told us “I’m never more happy than when I’m drawing type by hand”. Swifty’s passion for drawing by hand has got us inspired to take a look at few of our favourite products for people who love to draw and those who would like to give drawing a try.
The Blackwing 602 Pencil has an almost cult like status. Originally manufactured by Eberhard Faber, the pencils were discontinued in 1998 much to the dismay of scribblers, doodlers and illustrators. Thankfully Palomino came to the rescue and revived this famous pencil that to many is unrivalled in the pencil world. We recommend the Palomino Blackwing for artists because of the slightly softer and darker lead, and the Palomino Blackwing 602 for writing and everyday use.
#2 Wooden Hand
Drawing from life or observational drawing can help develop an understanding of shape, proportion, detail and proportion. This wooden hand by Hay will help you master the difficult task of drawing hands in a variety of positions. As with everything, practice makes perfect and the more you study and observe the easier it will become to draw what hands look like rather than what we think they should look like.
This is a great book for beginners and does what it says on the tin. Filled with exercises, examples and problem solving solutions this book will guide you through the techniques and tools needed to gain confidence and develop your drawing skills.
No draughtsman’s pencil case is complete without a decent eraser. Derwent have been manufacturing drawing materials for over 180 years, so you can trust that they know a thing or two rubbing out pencil marks! This dual pack is great because you have erasers suitable for all types of pencils and the marks they make.
As with the eraser, if you are setting up your pencil case for drawing, you will most certainly need a decent pencil sharpener and we recommend trying M+R’s Professional Solid Brass Circular Sharpener. Not only does this look and feel great, it performs exceptionally well with graphite, pencils and colouring pencils.
