Glug Leeds #6 It’s No So Grim Up North 12 Jul

We were delighted to be asked to talk at the next Glug Leeds event at Duke Studios. The organisers have gone back to their roots with an event showcasing the wonderful talents we have up North so they’ve gathered a line of speakers to talk about why the North is a great place to be living and doing business right now, because you know what it’s not so Grim up North!

glugleeds

Glug is a series of events for the design and creative community. Based around a series of talks and informal networking, Glug has become one of the most exciting, credible and well attended creative events around. Established in 2007, it’s an eclectic mix of people from all creative walks of life; from advertising, graphic design and the visual arts through to fashion, architecture and the crafts.

Paul Walker, one of our two Managing Directors and fifth generation of the Aldous family, will be speaking at Glug #6, sharing a potted history from our beginnings back in 1886 to date and why we have made the move over to Leeds. After opening our doors in Leeds back in October it has been an absolute pleasure to meet people who live and work there so we’re are looking forward to meeting more on the night.

Alongside Paul, there are going to be talks from creatives who are running their businesses in the North:

Side By Side presents Grimm & Co

There are two sides to Grimm & Co – The Apothecary supplying sorcery services & unnatural products to magical beings and the Yorkshire charity: writing & mentoring centre for children & young people. Dave and Oliver from Side by Side will join us to share the reason they took this fee free contract to create something just a wee bit special in Rotherham.

HackSaw Studio

A small but perfectly formed design studio down in Sheffield generating world class creative across digital and the traditional media disciplines to provide an integrated approach that get you excited about marketing again. When Meadow Hall turned 25 last year, it was local boys Hacksaw they called into design the celebration graphics. Kyle Wilkson founder of Hacksaw will be along to tell how he built an awarding studio in Sheffield and what plans lay ahead for Hacksaw.

Kristyna Baczynski

Kristyna Baczynski is an illustrator, comic book artist and designer. Freelancing from her studio in Leeds she creates books, comics, zines, posters, apparel, stationery and more for a wide range of clients that has included Chipotle, Anorak, The Royal Shakespeare Company, IBM and Etsy. Her illustration work won her a Northern Design Award.
As well as creating her own comics (Hand me Down, A Measure Of Space, Vessel, Vantage), Kristyna has worked with publishers at home and internationally such as Fantagraphics, Image and Sequential. Her comics have been nominated for two British Comic Book Awards and an Eisner.

Ponderosa presents Silvine

Ponderosa will be joining us to talk through how they approached the Leeds based stationers Silvine with a view to make their long forgotten red books relevant for the 21st Century. A true British icon, reinvented – Silvine Originals have been sensitively redesigned, inspired by their British heritage.

After hearing from the fabulous speakers Glug are hosting an after party with Architects of Paradise DJ Sonomic and the Ninety Nine crew providing the soundtrack to our summer event, and of course the bar will be open so stick around enjoy a beer or two or three and get stuck into some notworking.
