Details

Silicone Rubber for moulding and casting. A general purpose mould making silicone(33 shore A) easy mix 50:50. Can also be used to make realistic body casts direct from an Alginate mould. Mix equal amounts of silcone together until the colour is even. There is a graduated scale on the side of each bottle to help measure equal amounts, you can also stand the bottles side by side to check the level is equal. If y
ou have a problem with air bubbles in the mix, mix carefully and not to quickly. Try pouring equal amounts of silicone into a grip seal bag, squeaze out the excess air and seal off with tape, then mix in the bag. When the colour is even snip a corner and pour out the mixture. Silicone moulds can be used to bake polymer clay, while still in the mould. For use with food treat in oven 120c - 130c for 6 to 7 hours.

Q. I've used the THIXO 40LT mix before and found it too viscous to pour, is this option better, and will it handle the temperature if I create moulds for multiple castings of lead items?

Asked by Ben - 19/09/2011

A. For spec on Red silicone see http://en.zhermack.com/Industrial/Jewellery/prodotti/HT_33_Red.kl Lead melts at 600.61 K, 327.46 °C, 621.43 °F this would be too high for most silicones. Try the heat resisting silicone, see http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/heat-resistant-silicone-rubber-250g.html You can make simple moulds using cuttlefish bone from a pet shop. Because cuttlebone is able to withstand high temperatures and is easily carved, it serves as a mold-making material for small metal casting. Prepare cuttlefish bone for use as a mold by cutting it in half and rubbing the two sides together until they fit flush against one another. Then the casting can be done by carving a design into the cuttlefish bone, adding the necessary sprue, melting the metal in a separate pouring crucible, and pouring the molten metal into the mold through the sprue. Finally, the sprue is sawn off and the finished piece is polished.
